Son Wan Ho(KOR) 2 (21-13, 21-13) 0 Yu Igarashi(JPN)

Son Wan Ho who is the No.1 by the BWF ranking and World Champion bronze medalist showed up the round 1. No prizes for guessing, Son advanced the round 2 preserving his stamina.

Son controlled every rally right through the match and showed off strength as leader of ranking.
Son got rid of opponent's attacking opportunities by his accurate net shots and sharp drops to the fore court. In addition, his stable defense made Igarashi rush to attack and led to errors. Son closed the first game by 21-13.

Igarashi fought back Son's attack by patient defense, sometimes showed diving receives, until the middle of second game to 6-7 led by Son. In despite of Igarashi's good play, Son accelerated his pace and changed to be aggressive after the interval. Igarashi couldn't follow Son's speed, and after all Son won the match easily by 21-13

Lin Dan(CHN) 2 (11-21, 21-15, 21-13) 1 Sourabh Verma(IND)

Legendary Chinese player, Lin Dan ranked No.3 by BWF played against Indian No.33 world ranking, Sourabh Verma at the round 1. This was the second time to meet at the tournament.

Lin started to play carefully to checked the condition of arena and adjusted his physical. Sourabh, as contrasted with Lin, played aggressively with sharp cross cuts and steep smashes. Lin took too much time to accommodate himself, and Sourabh closed this game relatively easy by 21-11.

Lin didn't change his style so much, but he seemed to be a little bit patient and defensive. Sourabh made a lot of unforced errors compared with the first game. Lin's accurate placement to the fore and rear corner led that. Lin didn't miss every chance to finish the rallies with his various net shots and smashes. Before spectators knew it, he closed the match by 21-15, 21-13 eventually.

Viktor Axelsen(DEN) 2 (21-8, 21-13 ) 0 Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk(THA)

Viktor Axelsen, 23years old, appeared first time in this DYJ 2017. After winning his first titles in India Open and BWF World Championships this year, Viktor still said that he is 'hungry with titles' in the press interview last night. Today, Viktor showed off his speed, power and tactic net plays which overwhelmed Saensomboonsuk.

It was the third battle between two players, and Viktor beat in straight games in the past games. This time, thanks to some net-in shots and his aggressive play in the forecourt, Saensomboonsuk succeeded in building 3 points lead in the first half of 2nd game. However, the match was totally to Viktor's pace and Viktor scraped Saensomboonsuk in straight games again.

Lee Chong Wei(MSA) 2(21-15, 16-21, 21-17) Wong Wing Ki Vincent(HKG)

As to the latest BWF ranking, Lee is ranked at 7th, while Wong at 13th. Of course, as well known, Lee has been keeping the place of No 1 during 181 weeks (longest record of BWF), and more than 300 weeks summed up. Such a legend who aims 7th time victory in this Daihatsu Yonex Japan Open today played against Wong.

Lee won the match against Wong by a very narrow margin.

1st game proceeded closely till 9-9, where Lee kept attacking to get 6 consecutive points to 15-9. After that both players got points one another, and Lee closed game with Wong's return shot to Lee's smash going over the back-boundary line.

2nd game was again seesaw game but after Lee's 10-11, Lee made several unforced errors unlikely to usual Lee Chong Wei such as making his smash going out of side line against chance shuttle. On the contrary, Wong made timely very strong and steep smashes to get his points. Wong close the game 21-16.

Final game started almost same as previous 2 games. Lee showed his superior techniques at every strategic point, while Wong kept attacking with his strong smashes. Lee got 3 consecutive points to his 14-11, then Wong caught up to 14 all and led by 16-14. At Lee's 18-17, Wong made fatal errors consecutively with his cross smash going out of side line twice and finally his service return going out of back boundary line to lose the game.

Through the game, Lee made so many unforced errors for all spectators not to believe. But his strong conviction of victory of himself made his winning this hard and difficult battle.

Lee quoted; My performance in Glasgow was very unsatisfactory, so I swore to myself to come back again and win the super series. Today I could win the very hard game under this not so good condition of mine. I wish to connect this result with the play tomorrow onward and to step up to better result.

Chou Tien Chen(TPE) 2 (21-14, 21-11) 0 Kanta Tsuneyama

This is the first meeting for Taiwanese and Japanese. Kanta Tsuneyama, Japanese next generation of No. 34 BWF ranking and was winner of Canada Open 2017, was overwhelmed by Chou Tien Chen No.5 BWF ranking who is runner up of India Open 2017 in 35 minutes.

Tsuneyama had been brave to hit powerful smashes again and again from the beginning, and his quick footwork covered from corner to corner of the court. Tsuneyama's aggressiveness was successful to lead the score by 14-12 in the first game. However, the situation was suddenly changed in favor of Chou. High ranked Korean got used to receiving the shots by the opponent and hit the fine counter shots. Chou finished the first game by 21-14 with 9 consecutive points.

2 minutes' interval was not enough for Tsuneyama to adjust the opponent's style. The momentum as his ally, Chou controlled rallies steadily through the second game. He showed the skillful shots and the accurate placement, and he won the match without difficulty by 21-11.

Ratchanok Intanon(THA) 2 (22-20, 21-12) 0 Fitriani Fitriani(INA)

1st game, both players played patiently with steady high clears using smashes and drop shots from time to time. Intanon' s cross net shots especially from foreside to opponent's fore side were very effective. Fitriani got 3 consecutive points to her game point from 17-19 behind to Intanon.

From this critical point, Intanon 3 consecutive to close the game with abovementioned cross net shot, steep straight smash and push shot from net area.

2nd game, Intanon fully sped up her play and led to 20-8 including 5 consecutive and 6 consecutive points. Fitrian made her last effort to resist and took 4 consecutive points attacking persistently Intanon's back side. Intanon finished match 21-12 with Fitriani's smash not going over the net.

Nozomi Okuhara(JPN) 2 (21-15, 21-13) 0 Cheung Ngan Yi(HKG)

Nozomi Okuhara, who won the BWF World Championship this year, got a lot of cheer when came up this evening. In yesterday's press interview, two of the top players, Carolina Marin(ESP) and Pusarla V.Sindhu(IND), admitted that Okuhara had rapidly been becoming strong recently, although Okuhara herself said that winning just a single game is so hard that she only tries to concentrate on upcoming matches. Today she showed us how she had improved her physical and mental skills within a year.

Yi's cross killings were so effective to earn 15 points in first game and 13 points in the second. However, Okuhara, being good at persistent defense, had also improved fierce offensive performances and overcame Yi all through the match.

Pusarla V. Sindhu (IND) 2 (12-21, 21-15, 21-17) 1 Minatsu Mitani (JPN)

Pusarla V. Sindhu, silver medalist of WS Rio Olympic and runner –up of World Championship in August, faced Japanese sticky Minatsu Mitani. They fought last week in Seoul and Sindhu won by 2-1 after the fierce competition.

Mitani started the match with concentration and moved quickly to place the shuttlecock to the corners. Sidhu could not adjust Mitani's pace and repeated unforced errors which caused the 1st. game was dominated by the Japanese. At the interval Mitani led by 11-3 and after then she kept her speedy footwork and attacked by the strong driven clears to the rear court of the opponent. Sindhu tried to catch up by her characteristic steep smashes, but she lost the game by 12-21.

In the second game Sindhu who dully warmed up, sometimes pushed Mitani to the right back side corner by the powerful shots and for the first time she led the score by 7-6. Mitani became to be more defensive as the shots by the tall Indian lady were so powerful and strong. Sindhu's crossed and steep smashes were also effective to widen the lead. Some delicate judgments of the side line which were not favor for Mitani added psychological damage to her. The 2nd game was taken by Sindhu Sindhu was energetic more and overwhelmed Mitani in the final game. Sindhu kept leading the score all the way to finish by 21-17.

After the match, Sindhu said she would like to enjoy tomorrow as she would face again Okuhara in the second round with the expectation of the long duration of the match. (s)

Carolina Marin(ESP) 2 (21-11, 21-11) 0 Chen Xiaoxin(CHN)

Marin overwhelmed Chen throughout the match, and only her shouts of victory rang around the arena.

In the 1st game, Chen contested to Marin playing persistently which inducing several unforced errors of Marin.

Marin paced up and kept attacking aggressively at her 12-11 and got 9 consecutive points to close the game.

2nd round proceeded like 1st game to 3-3, but Marin again started her attacking attitude with severe high clears followed by her characteristic strong smashes, and finished the match 21-11.

She seemed to surely have the self-confidence in her own play.

Marcus Fernaldi Gideon & Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo (INA) 2 (27-25, 21-15) 0 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy & Chirag Shetty (IND)

Indonesian duo, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon & Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, #3 world ranked and the winner of All England, India Open and Malaysia Open of SS this year was challenged by young Indian pair who defeated Japanese 2 pairs yesterday through the qualified round.

From the beginning, young Indians were much aggressive to stroke the steep smashes by taking their tall advantages, but Kevin, the high skilled technician, quickly placed the shuttlecock from the front court effectively together with the clever and various speeded smashes by Marcus from the rear court. The score itself was seesawed before coming to a bit tense end of the 1st. game. Indonesian firstly took the game point, but lost 4 times, while Indian also lost chance 2 times and finally the experienced high ranked pair took the 1st. game.

In the second game Indonesian became more stable and showed sometimes the tricky returns to the opponent. The beautiful combination of the strokes and fine placements overwhelmed young Indian. Again sometimes powerful and steep smashes gave points to Indian, but they have never caught up and closed by 21-15 in favor of Indonesian. (s)

Mathias Boe & Carsten Mogensen(DEN) 2 (21-15, 21-11) 0 Marcus Ellis & Chris Langridge(ENG)

BWF world ranking No.1 Danish pair, Boe & Mogensen played against world ranking No.24 English pair, Marcus & Langridge.

Though the score seesawed with contributing Marcus and Chris pair's aggressiveness in the beginning of the first game, Boe & Mogensen gradually displayed their unbreakable defense and controlled the rallies.
Dane showed beautiful combination in both offense and defense as often as English pair tried to breach the wall with the powerful and fierce smashes. Danish stable counter defense and patient smashes were worthy of the ranking. After all, Boe & Mogensen won the match by 21-15, 21-11.

Misaki Matsutomo & Ayaka Takahashi(JPN) 2 (21-12,21-8) 0 Poon Lok Yan & Tse Ying Suet(HKG)

Tokyo MetropolitanGymnasium was surrounded by cheers of Japanese fans when Rio 2016 Olympics gold medalists Matsutomo/ Takahashi appeared this evening.
Many Japanese fans purchased 'Night Session Tickets' to see their play. Matsutomo/Takahashi has been missing the title of this championship since 2014, and many Japanese fans wish their victory this time.

Just after the first game started, Matsutomo/Takahashi seemed to be a bit overcome by Yan/Tse as they rather played defensively. However, as they warmed up enough, they showed their original powerful performances and spectators were attracted by their killing shots and fierce attacking drives which never let Yan/Tse earn more than 2 points. Matsutomo/Takahashi swept to victory in straight games.

Kim Ha Na & Hee Yong Kong (KOR) 2 (21-18,21-15) 0 Julie Finne-ipsen/Rikke Soby(DEN)

Kim/Hee, coming up from qualifying round yesterday, fought against WR. 28th Danish duo, Finne/Soby.
It was exciting game to see how newly built pair Kim/Hee, who played mainly in mixed double style yesterday, fought against Danish pair today. Kim, who is a leading player of mixed doubles, attracted us by showing her excellent technique of choosing soft and fierce shots according to the game situation.

In the first game, different from yesterday, Kim and Hee both aggressively move forward to build a front-back attacking formation and they always led the game. Finne/Soby patiently kept up with Kim/Hee, but couldn't make any lead.

In the second game, Finne/Soby accelerated their speed and aggressively came forward to push Kim/Hee's returns. This was effective to build 2 points lead to 12-10, however after reaching 12-12 tie, Kim/Hee pair seemed to be more concentrated and overwhelmed Finne/Sobbie in straight games.

Paraveen Jordan & Debby Susanto (INA) 2 (21-19, 21-18) 0 Han Chengkai & Du Yue (CHN)

1st game proceeded closely till 8-8, the Chinese duo got 5 consecutive points keeping their attack with drives and smashes. Then Jordan made very skillful cross drop shot from his back side to opponent's backside, Susanto smashed Han's high clear, and Susanto made cross smash from foreside court of them resulting to their 3 consecutive points.

Both sides made several unforced errors to Indonesia's leading by 20-18. China got 19th points continuing strong drive shots. Indonesia closed 1st game with Susanto pushing opponent's service and finishing by smashing return.
2nd game again was seesaw game until Indonesia's 18-17, where china made 2 easy mistakes, and Indonesia finished match 21-18 with Jordan's swift and steep smash. .
